Researching the market place and Initial plans (task 2&3)

Today we had to think about the market place, were our magazines would be sold if we were to put it into shops, and what competitors our magazine may have. I looked at some pop magazines, and this is what I found:

Researching the Market place

‘Top of the pops’ and ‘we love pop’ are two magazines that are similar to the magazine I wish to create. They have the same genre and would include similar artists and feature articles as my magazine.

‘Top of the pops’ is a magazine that has been going for a long time, and is fully established. It retails at a price of £2.99 and is usually published every 3 – 4 weeks. Every issue has about the same number of pages, with an average of 64 pages. The magazine does not have solid regular content, although usually included in the magazine are horoscopes, quizzes, competitions, agony aunt pages and ‘oops’ pages where celebrities share embarrassing stories. The feature articles for this particular issue is ‘my Dog was trampled to death by cows’ ‘booboo Stewart spills all on the new twilight movie’ ‘The one direction lads talk friendship’ ‘one direction and the wanted posters’, all these would be appealing to the audience because they are artists that the target audience like and because the magazine is aimed at teenage girls, I think that having boy bands on the magazine would attract them to read it.

The next magazine I will look at is ‘we love pop’. This is a monthly magazine and also retails at £2.99. Each issue has around 65 pages. Again there is not a lot of regular content but there is a ‘1d page’, which focuses on the band one direction and is shown every month, there is also an ‘omg’ page where people share there embarrassing stories, and there is also an ‘agony uncle’ page where john and Edward grimes offer advice and answer peoples questions. There are lots of different feature articles such as interviews with Tulsa from n-dubz, an interview with Lea Michelle and Dianna Agron from glee as well as lots of CD reviews.

Initial plans for my magazine:

I have decided that I will retail my magazine at £2.99 because this is a very common price and seems reasonable. My magazine will have about 65 pages (you will be able to tell this from the contents) it will also be a monthly magazine like the two above.
